O Brien Crew Comes Through in the Clutch at Brockville
BROCKVILLE-At 10 o clock on Thursday night, Danny O Brien was not in a good place. His Bicknell chassis was in pieces on the back of a flatbed after an incident at a 358 Super DIRT Series event. However, 48 hours later, the same car was in victory lane for the third straight week at Brockville Ontario Speedway and the Pocket Rocket found himself with a new life in the point standings at the Beast of the East.
The 30 lap Modified feature got off to a slow start as a seven car car crash on lap 1 in the second turn claimed a couple of contenders including Bill Gill, Tim O Brien and Brian McDonald for the night. Jason Riddell was the dominant car in the early going relying on a groove that took him to the outer boundaries of the racing surface. Riddell was living on the edge and the car slipped a little too high in turn 4 handing over the lead to O Brien, who cruised the rest of the way to a easy win. Todd Stewart held off Kyle Dingwall, who came into the night as the points leader, for second spot, with Ryan Poole and Paul Pekkonen rounding out the fast five. O Brien was quick to credit the victory to his crew as everyone pitched in, taking time off work or booking holidays quickly to make sure the 17d was ready for action again after Thursdays wreck.
Chris Raabe also set himself up for a potential track championship in the Sportsman class as he reclaimed the top spot after a win in the 25 lap Sportsman main event. Raabe made it look easy as he scored his 16th DIRT sanctioned feature win of the season, taking the lead prior to the midway point from Mike Mainse. A ten car crash in turn one brought out the red flag early in the event as the track was completely blocked. Randy Gaudet finished in the runnerup spot followed by Mainse, Sheldon Hoogwerf and former points kingpin Cole Dingwall.
The Street Stocks ran a special 40 lap Invitational Event, part of a series that includes stops at Brighton, Edelweiss and Cornwall. Brighton cars proved to be the class of the field most of the night with Paul Read nipping Shawn Gregory at the finish line for the $500 win. Craig Handler was third in front of Marc Lalonde and Benoit Dubois.
Gerry Oszczakiewicz and Bob Ray are great friends and always seem to be battling for the win in the Rookie class when both show up. Oszczakiewicz prevailed on this night with Ray on his back bumper at the finish. Mike Gaucher, Steve Barber and Dwight Feltham were third through fifth respectively.
