LaFrance and O Brien split Modified Twin 30's at Brockville
BROCKVILLE-It was something new and something familiar in victory lane on Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway as the 358 Modifieds ran twin 30 lap features to make up for a July rain out. Defending track champ Danny O Brien paid one of this usual visits to the winner's circle in the night cap. However, in the opener Stephane LaFrance in a self built car wheeled to the win in the opener, becoming the first non mass produced chassis in years to win at the Beast of the East.
LaFrance ran the bottom groove throughout the first feature daring O Brien to go around him on the outside of the race track. The Pocket Rocket tried to slip by on the inside numerous times to no avail as the Little Hammer won for the first time in 2008. An emotional LaFrance was almost in tears in victory lane in thanking his supporters and crew for believing in him and his self built car. Kyle Dingwall was third in front of Bryan Rogers and Todd Stewart. O Brien was again forced to make an outside move work in the nightcap, but this time he managed to forge his way past Adam Moore around the halfway mark, before returning to the bottom to ride it out the rest of the way. Moore was a strong second holding off Dingwall, Tim O Brien and Stewart. The second 30 was red flagged after Brian McDonald got airborne and into the front stretch fencing and concrete. He walked away under his own power.
15 year old Matt Billings grabbed his second career DIRT Sportsman victory by getting out to an early lead and then shutting the door on the low side to Cole Dingwall. Dingwall charged through the field from his 18th starting spot to almost score his third straight win. Tyler Rand's best effort of the year left him third followed across the finish line by Randy Earl and Luke Whitteker.
The Street Stocks also ran two features to make up for the July 12th washout. Kevin Jordan shocked the field with a wire to wire win in the first 20 lapper holding off Dana Aikins. Steve Billings, JP Laberge and Jack Code were third through fifth respectively. This race was red flagged as well after a wild quadruple rollover by Art Brown in turn 1. Brown was shaken up but also managed the walk back to the pits on his own. The fireworks were saved for the second feature as Billings and Aikins battled back and forth for the lead until the final turn of the final lap. They got together and that opened the door for Dominic Gauvreau to slide into victory lane untouched. Billings recovered for second with Derek Cryderman, Nicholas Gauvreau and Steve Harrigan in tow.
Josh Kane was back in fine form in the 16 lap rookie race dominating the second half of the event and easily outdistancing Chris Bakker. Bob Ray, Gerry O and Dwight Feltham rounded out the top five. This one was red flagged as well after Frank Mitchell Jr's car caught on fire coming down the front stretch. It was put out without any further incident. Tabatha Murphy won a special 5 lap exhibition Sportsman race by a few car lengths over Jessica Power.
